Recently I was watching Dr Phil and I was amazed! Why was I amazed? The issue that Dr. Phil was addressing on his show was obese children. There was a 5 year old who weighed 113 pounds and a 3 year old who weighed 88 pounds. That was unreal to me! What was even more amazing was that the parents were clueless when it came to health and nutrition. None of these children had medical problems that caused them to be over weight, but their obesity was resulting in health problems like diabiates. One child was snacking on chips etc and her mother told her that she should not be eating that and her response was “why did you buy it, if you didn’t want me to eat it’. The parent was unable to answer this question. But this child was asking the right question. It was not surprising that the parents were also over weight. So of course I was telling my mother about this program and her comment was that this should be considered child abuse! Seriously though, children are taken often away from their parents when a child is disciplined by a slapping etc, (I am not at all condoning child abuse when children are punished to the extreme). So why are children not taken away from their parents if the child is morbidly obese and the parents do not provide balanced nutritious meals. Should children be taken away from their parents in cases such as those shown on Dr. Phil?
I remember I once told someone that the first time I ate McDonald’s food (since my parents didn’t believe in McDonald’s) was when I was in my teens. This person’s comment to me was “didn’t you feel deprived”? I thought that was the strangest question. Why would I feel deprived of junk food? But maybe those obese children on Dr. Phil are deprived of healthy and nutritious meals and living healthy lives as a result of their health problems?
